Final Fantasy 7 Remake Combat Remade Multiple Times | Game Rant

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a massive deviation from the original game in a significant number of ways. While Final Fantasy 7 Remake's story houses most of the game's changes, its combat system is also notable. In a new interview, Square Enix describes how Final Fantasy 7 Remake's combat was remade several times before the team was happy with it.

In an upcoming issue of Weekly Famitsu, Final Fantasy 7 Remake director Tetsuya Nomura spoke about the game's development. Regarding Final Fantasy 7 Remake's combat system, he says, "the battle system was remade multiple times in development," due in part to the team's changing priorities.

Nomura says the priority for Final Fantasy 7 Remake's combat was immersion through "realtime control" first. After that, the second priority was to keep the Active Time Battle system of Final Fantasy 7. Nomura acknowledges these are contradictory, which is why it took "a lot of trial and error to get it right."

The Square Enix development team for Final Fantasy 7 Remake is pleased they were able to find a balance in the game's combat system. Producer Yoshinori Kitase says that the hybrid system of combing action and commands, "turned out better than ... imagined," due to the development team's efforts. Players will be able to decide for themselves how well Square Enix meshed classic Final Fantasy 7 combat with Nomura's new ideas.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is available now on PS4.
