Borderlands 3: Every Character's Most Useful (& Useless) Class Mods

Class mods are one of the most powerful pieces of gear you can have on your character in Borderlands 3. They provide useful bonuses to your most powerful skills, come with a range of side benefits like improved weapon damage or reloading speed, and some of the legendary class mods have incredible special effects that can turn your character into a one person wrecking ball.

Yet not all class mods are created equal, some of the more commonly found mods have weak bonuses for less useful skills. Whichever Vault Hunter you’re thinking about using on your next playthrough it’s useful to know which class mods you should be looking out for and which ones you should utterly avoid unless you have nothing else to use.

8 Zane’s Least Useful: Freedom Fighter

Zane’s class mod Freedom Fighter would be useful later in the game when his stats and skill levels are better, but by that point he’ll have a better class mod and this will have long been replaced which is why it makes the list.

It provides bonuses to the skills Adrenaline, Duct Tape Mod, and Praemunitus. Adrenaline increases the cooldown rate of action skills the higher his current shield percentage is, Duct Tape Mod gives a chance of a grenade launching with the first shot fired, and Praemunitus gives Zane and the Digi-Clone a larger magazine. Freedom Fighter has its uses, but there are better class mods that Zane could equip, making this one the least useful of the lot.

7 Zane’s Most Useful: Antifreeze

Some of Zane’s most powerful builds make him a bit of a glass cannon, which requires he be on the move to avoid damage and kite opponents. Antifreeze is a legendary class mod that rewards Zane for being as mobile as possible.

Whenever he slides or is airborne Antifreeze kicks in and provides a 40% boost to his damage output and reduces damage received by 20%. It also nullifies the impact of the Slowed status effect by providing a 25% boost to movement speed. This is arguably one of Zane’s best class mods.

6 FL4K's Least Useful: Headcase

This entry might be controversial for some, but Headcase is the least useful class mod FL4K can use. It provides bonuses to Ambush Predator, Leave No Trace, and The Fast and the Furryous. Ambush Predator gives a bonus to critical hit damage and handling when there are no enemies nearby, Leave No Trace has a chance to regenerate a single bullet when dealing a critical, and The Fast and The Furryous gives increased damage to FL4K and his pets, along with improved movement speed if FL4K’s health is above half.

Those who have a preference for legendary sniper rifles might find this mod useful, but anyone wishing to exploit the true potential of FL4K as a beast master won't. It requires sniping from a distance, killing the enemy quickly, and not losing any health. Besides, Bushmaster is very similar and arguably better as it swaps The Fast and The Furryous for Turn Tail and Run for useful bonuses while moving or not moving.

5 FL4K's Most Useful: R4KK P4K

Pet based builds are on the rise thanks to some recent changes to the damage they deal and FL4K has gotten very powerful as a result. Perhaps the strongest pet in FL4K’s arsenal thanks to this mod is the Rakk.

With the R4KK P4K class mod your Rakk has the unique ability to split into two Rakks whenever it strikes the enemy. This effect applies to every Rakk on your side meaning each Rakk will continue splitting until you have a whole horde on your side swooping down on your enemies. As soon as you get this class mod, make sure FL4K has the skill Falconer’s Feast and heath should no longer be a problem for you.

4 Moze's Least Useful: Baby Boomer

This common class mod is probably the least useful that Moze could have equipped. It provides a boost to the skills Means of Destruction, Redistribution, and Torgue Cross-Promotion. Means of Destruction has a chance to regenerate ammo and possibly a grenade whenever splash damage is dealt, Redistribution lets Moze regenerate ammo whenever she deals a critical, and Togue Cross-Promotion gives Moze a chance to double the radius of her splash damage.

Admittedly, Baby Boomer can be handy given its passivity and if the player is dealing largely splash damage and criticals, but the other mods improve better skills and regenerating ammo isn’t nearly as helpful as dealing more damage like Grenadier would.

3 Moze's Most Useful: Raging Bear

The Iron Bear mech is very powerful with the right setup and Moze’s class mod Raging Bear is an absolute must if you plan on spending a large amount of time in this iron monstrosity. Raging Bear lowers the amount of fuel consumed whenever you make a kill while in the Iron Bear.

The other strong benefit is that the Iron Bear’s damage rises with each kill. When combined with a skill like Stainless Steel Bear, the Iron Bear can take quite a few hits, see their damage rise and be able to spend longer behind the wheel killing enemies.

2 Amara's Least Useful: Warrior

The common Warrior class mod could be considered the least useful class mod Amara could use. It provides a bonus to the skills Arms Deal, Jab Cross, and Violent Tapestry. Arms Deal increases splash damage dealt and reduces the splash damage received, Jab Cross uses melee damage to increase gun damage, and Violent Tapestry gives a rush stack whenever Amara applies a status effect.

It requires particular builds to take advantage of these skills, particularly Jab Cross, that many beginners probably wont be in a position to take advantage of let alone exploit. Something like Pilgrim would be better until you get into rarer mods.

1 Amara's Most Useful: Spiritual Driver

The most useful class mod for Amara is a bit of a strange one, as it’s hard to realize its full potential right away without some prior knowledge and mastery of Amara’s skills. Spiritual Driver provides the benefit of improving damage as the player’s movement speed increases. It also applies the elemental effect of an action skill on herself, such as causing Amara to burn if the action skill involves fire damage.

It sounds like a major downside with little upside, but the skill Mindfulness really makes this mod sing. It gives Amara up to 25 stacks of a 4.2% movement speed bonus whenever damage is received. Considering she’s guaranteed to receive damage using an action skill with this mod that means she’s capable of receiving a 105% increase to movement speed which translates to an overwhelming increase in gun damage as long as she’s moving at top speed.
