The PlayStation 2 is probably the greatest video game console of all time. Well, maybe not the greatest, but probably the most iconic! It contained some of the greatest and most influential games ever made, and it still remains the highest-selling console in history.
As you can probably imagine, many of its games have become collector's items over the years. Some are rare and some are seemingly just expensive for the sake of being expensive.
Either way, getting your paws on these video games will cost you a pretty penny. These are the ten rarest PS2 games and how much they're currently worth.
10 Dragon Blaze - $100-250
Dragon Blaze was originally released exclusively in Japan before seeing a limited release as a budget title in Europe. Due to its status as a budget title, the game never received a wide release and is increasingly hard to find. However, we ARE on the internet, and anything can be found on the internet. Even Dragon Blaze, believe it or not. It's not rare to see copies of this game going for $100 on eBay, and new and sealed copies can fetch as much as $250. It's not a lot compared to some of the others on this list, but for a video game, it's still a pricey purchase!
9 .hack Quarantine - $250
The .hack video games are a series of action RPGs developed by CyberConnect2 and published by Bandai. .hack Quarantine was released in North America in 2004 and received mixed reviews, with some claiming that it wrapped up the series in a beautiful way while others called it plodding and confusing. Regardless of your opinion on the quality of the game, it is selling for quite a pretty penny today. Brand new copies of the game have been seen selling for as much as $250 on eBay, and used copies can even fetch upwards of $150!
8 Blood Will Tell - $200-350
Based on the manga Dororo, Blood Will Tell is a samurai-themed beat-em-up developed by Sega and released in 2004. The game did not receive very good reviews and was subsequently lost in the myriad of fantastic games that were released in 2004, including Half-Life 2, San Andreas, and Halo 2.
It remains a rare title, and even the open and used copies can go for upwards of $200. Things get really interesting when we look at the brand new, sealed copies, as those can go for as much as $350! Not bad for a video game no one played...
7 Garfield: Saving Arlene - $250-350
Now who would have thought that a video game called Garfield: Saving Arlene would be known as one of the most valuable PS2 games of all time? Such is the power of Garfield! This PAL release is exceedingly rare. In fact, it is likely the rarest video game ever released for the PlayStation 2! That said, it's not as valuable as that distinction may suggest (probably because no one cares). Two copies appeared on eBay in 2019, selling for $100 and $250. A sealed copy even sold for $350 at some point in time, according to pricecharting.com!
6 Haunting Ground - $400
Haunting Ground is a Japanese survival horror game that shares a lot in common with the Clock Tower series. Unlike that series, Haunting Ground received mixed reviews and never really found an audience. Critics lauded the graphics, overall presentation, and the unique player-avatar relationship with protagonist Fiona, but they still found the game too derivative of past survival horror titles (...like Clock Tower). The game is now quite a collector's item, and a sealed copy can fetch upwards of $400 on eBay! It's...scary...how expensive these games can get!
5 Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 - $350-400
You may not think it, but Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is actually worth quite a lot of money! Serving as the fourth installment in the iconic Marvel vs. Capcom series, this game featured a ton of new features, including three-on-three gameplay and a simpler control scheme.
Despite receiving good reviews, Capcom subsequently lost the license to publish Marvel characters and the series embarked on an extended hiatus. Maybe it's due to the unfortunate history behind the game, but either way, sealed copies of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 are fetching upwards of $350-400 on eBay.
4 The King Of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match - $350-660
Serving as the ninth game in the main series, The King of Fighters 2002 was released for the Neo Geo before being parted to the PlayStation 2 two years later. A remake of the game, titled Unlimited Match, was published exclusively in Japan in 2009. Imagine that - people were still playing PlayStation 2 games in 2009! This particular version of the game is exceedingly hard to find and is rarely sold on eBay. That said, it does appear from time to time. Used copies of the game can fetch as much as $350, while a sealed copy has been sold for $660.
3 Kuon - $400-700
As you can see, the price of Kuon tends to jump quite a bit, depending on a variety of factors. Kuon is another survival horror video game, and it was actually developed by Dark Souls' FromSoftware. This has certainly helped raise its value over the years, as did its limited release and poor sales outside of Japan. Copies of Kuon are certainly not cheap, and even a used copy can fetch as much as $300. But when it comes to factory sealed copies, Kuon can jump anywhere between $400 and $700, making it one of the priciest (and rarest) video games released for the PS2!
2 Wizardry: Tale Of The Foresaken Land - $800+
We know what you're thinking - what in the heck is Wizardry: Tale of the Foresaken Land!? And to that, we say "exactly." This was a little video game released by Japanese developer Racjin back in 2001. It was also published by Atlus, a company well known for releasing video games in small runs. Small runs means rarity resulting in insane value. It's not rare to find a copy of this game online for $30 or so, although a new, sealed copy is much less common. A brand new copy of this game can fetch as much as $800, although it has been known to go above even that!
1 Rule Of Rose - $900
Rule of Rose is yet another survival horror game, developed by Punchline and published in North America by Atlus USA in 2006. It was actually the subject of a huge moral panic in Europe, as rumors quickly spread that the game contained elements of sadomasochism, brutal violence against children, and "underage eroticism." Despite finding these complaints "nonsense," the game was banned from the United Kingdom. It is perhaps due to this outrage that the game has become so valuable, and sealed copies can be found on eBay selling for $900!
