10 Pieces Of News We Learned From The New Final Fantasy 7 Trailer

Final Fantasy VII's hotly-anticipated remake received a new trailer last week. It is perhaps the final look at the title before its release, save for a potential launch trailer. With this in mind, let's take a moment to appreciate all the new things we learned from the roughly three minutes and fifty seconds of footage Square Enix was generous enough to edit together for fans and curious newcomers.

Some of the footage is familiar, but a huge chunk is all new to the eyes and ears. The recent delay was a small setback, though it will just make the release date all the more sweeter once it does come. There are some light spoilers below, so be wary.

10 Nibelheim

The trailer opens with the iconic flashback scene between Tifa and Cloud in their hometown. In it, the protagonist tells of his goal to join SOLDIER and become a hero like Sephiroth. The scene looks similar to how it did more than twenty years ago on the PlayStation, only infinitely more detailed and Cloud has a white shirt instead of a black one.

The camera even pans down onto the scene in a similar fashion. If predictions about the first part ending with the escape from Midgar are true, this will be the only glance players get at the town in the game.

9 Original Song

The trailer opens with a song called "Hollow," with music by longtime series composer Nobuo Uematsu. It wouldn't be a contemporary Japanese RPG if it didn't have an original song attached to it.

Thankfully, this tune is less the sappy, melodramatic fare one finds in a Kingdom Hearts opening cutscene and more in line with something one hears in a trailer from a Hideo Kojima game. Whatever its place is in the actual game, it'll probably hit everybody in the feels when it kicks in.

8 Jenova

The calamity from the skies at the heart of the game's conflict finally gets some camera time in this teaser. The alien's appearance is just as sickly and weird as it appeared in the original game, only this time it is in high-definition.

Fans don't just get a glimpse at it in the catatonic state, they also get to see Jenova-Birth, the boss form players fight early in the game. It'll be a while yet before the later Jenova bosses get some time in the spotlight.

7 Returning Enemies

Enemy designs were creative enough back in 1997. Seeing old favorites returning in a familiar form with the new graphics is a treat to behold. The Sweeper and Vargid Police are shown, with the latter barely popping up on screen before the shot cuts away to something else.

The amount of enemy types present in the original classic must have proven a challenge for the artists interpreting them for the remake.

6 Red XIII

Some things which seemed normal on the PS1's hardware left us scratching our heads wondering how modern graphics would interpret them. Red XIII is one of those characters who perhaps proved challenging to update, but he looks great from what is shown in the trailer.

Later in the game he is disguised as a sailor, stumbling around while trying to walk on two feet. Seeing this will be a real treat on current generation hardware, though that will probably be in a future game.

5 Honey Bee Inn

This was the biggest question mark upon the game's announcement. How can they make this iconic moment fit in for the modern era? They finally showed Cloud in all of his cross-dressing glory, and the result is fantastic. The narration over the segment - "True beauty is an expression of heart. A thing without shame to which notions of gender don't apply" - shows that they don't seem to be making a mockery of cross-dressing.

Only the final product will show if they handled the scene right, but we're optimistic it'll be as great a sequence in the remake as it was in the original.

4 New Boss Theme Arrangement

While playing the original, anytime the midi guitar riff came in, one knew they were in for a tough fight. However, the music was always there to back the player up and give them the energy to make it through the match. The new trailer showed off a new orchestral arrangement of the track, replacing the recognizable tones of the PS1's sound chip with organic instruments.

While the hard-hitting guitar and drums are absent, it retains a similar vibe, one which makes the player feel like they could take on anything.

3 The Mist Surrounding The Shinra Building

Several moments in the trailer showcase a strange mist surrounding the Shinra Building. This phenomenon was absent from the original game, and shows the team is ready to change things up with the new interpretation. The smoke is perhaps Sephiroth's doing, but it is impossible to say for sure. It looks like it is happening either before or after the bike chase, or the trailer's quick edits could have simply made it appear that way.

2 The Higher Ups At Shinra

Numerous side characters finally revealed themselves here, most of whom are higher-ups at the Shinra corporation. Hojo, Palmer, Reeve, Heidegger, and Scarlet all debut here, the last of whom makes the biggest impression, shown sitting down using a henchmen as a footrest.

As obnoxious as this is, it fits in perfectly with what fans know about her from the original game. What'll really be interesting is to see how the slap fight goes down, but that will more than likely end up in a future game.

1 Roche's Potential Connection To Cloud

Nearly every face in the trailer is an old favorite or reviled nemesis. One character comes riding in on a bike at around the ninety-second mark who is entirely new to the story, and his name is Roche. He was teased in a prior trailer, but his appearance in this video adds to the mystery. Based on his dialog he seems to already know Cloud, and his outfit resembles the protagonist's garb.

Perhaps they know each other from Cloud's past in Shinra. This will be interesting to see play out, however, considering the future revelation regarding Cloud's true past with Shinra. Whatever Roche's place in the story is, it is great to see the team making changes and giving fans the unexpected.
