It shouldn’t be surprising that assault rifles are the most popular weapons in gaming due to their universal nature. Perfecting these guns is a good starting point for learning a new video game, and in the case of Apex Legends, the following tips and tricks will help you get comfortable and confident.
10 The Educational Potential
If you are making your very first steps in Apex Legends, then assault rifles are the weapons of choice to learn the game and its shooting mechanics. ARs handle well and offer an equally satisfying experience at every distance. Moreover, they possess enough firepower to be effective against experienced players who generally rely on a lot more skill-dependent weapons.
Assault rifles are also rather forgiving when you lack precision. At the same time, they are easily controlled if you invest a bit more time into learning them, which shouldn’t be hard.

Flatline kicks hard, but it is a very powerful weapon. It doesn’t necessarily have the highest value of damage per shot among all assault rifles, but it is indeed the strongest weapon for automatic ones. Auto-fire is the most popular type of delivering damage to your enemy, which makes semi-auto and burst-fire rifles less popular due to their somewhat uncomfortable handling.
Unfortunately, Flatline is not the champion of accuracy, so you have to bear that in mind. It’s not a weapon for long-range engagements since it loves hitting the walls to the left and right from the target. At short ranges, however, the weapon rocks.
7 Anvil Receiver FTW
While R-301 and Flatline are wonderful fully automatic rifles, you can effectively adjust them for long-range combat with the help of Anvil Receiver. This attachment greatly increases the damage output of both weapons when used in single-fire mode. Basically, they turn into semi-auto sniper rifles, although you can’t install a larger scope other than the purple 2x-4x one.
Obviously, with great power comes great responsibility. With Anvil Receiver equipped, both R-301 and Flatline get increased ammo consumption per shot and decreased rate of fire. You should also always remember that light rounds travel faster and drop less, while the features of heavy rounds are completely opposite.
6 Reliability Out-of-the-box
While other assault rifles desperately need at least a few attachments, Hemlok can be comfortably enjoyed as is. The only downside is that it doesn’t have fully automatic firing mode and thus requires more skill from a player. Still, if you manage to tame this absolute beast of an assault rifle, Hemlok turns into a comfortable, deadly, and very versatile weapon.
What makes Hemlok great is that it suits both CQB and long-range combat. At short to medium ranges, you can easily rely on three-shot bursts, which are devastating (best used with 2x-scope). At longer ranges, you can tap-fire with menacingly precise single shots.
5 Chaotic Energy
Energy weapons in Apex Legends are notorious for their unspecific field of use. Since the very release, these guns suffered for various reasons and have been multiple times rebalanced. Season 4 is no difference, as Havoc has lost its arguably best attachment, Turbocharger. Without it, the weapon is now definitely less popular.
Havoc is only great if you can survive the first few moments while it is warming up to reach a high rate of fire. After that, you have to deal with unbearable recoil since the barrel hops up in the air. By every means, Havoc is far from being a pleasant weapon to use.
4 Semi-Sniper
G7 Scout has always been a light sniper rifle, but Season 4 has brought a significant change. The weapon now belongs to assault rifles (and accepts respective attachments), which actually makes sense. You can no longer equip the gun with sniper scopes, but most players have been using the weapon at medium ranges regardless.
Moreover, the addition of the Double Tap Trigger modification in Season 3 further validated G7’s fate as a medium-range weapon. You can absolutely destroy your enemies with two-shot bursts face to face, while single fire is great for longer ranges. Obviously, it requires even more skill than Hemlok due to a lower rate of fire and less forgiving misses.
3 Celebrating Diversity
Assault rifles are not only great thanks to their relatively low entry barriers. They also provide players with various tactics and kinds of playstyles. Every weapon in this class has its weak and strong features, but the general characteristic is that assault rifles can fit every player. After you’ve experienced every available weapon for at least a few times, you can easily pick your favorite one and stick to it.
Assault rifles are also pretty understandable. Before you know it, you’ve already sorted out which weapon is better for a certain combat situation. And if you don’t feel comfortable with, for instance, G7, you can always switch to R-301 instead.
2 Adapting For CQB
Despite the invaluable versatility and comfortable handling of assault rifles, they tend to be less effective in CQB than shotguns or SMGs. There’re some tricks to make the most out of ARs even in CQB, but adapting your usual tactics might be a bit painful. For full-auto rifles, you can rely on pre-firing your enemies who you expect to appear from behind cover.
