With the Sonic The Hedgehog film getting up there with the other great video game films, its time to talk about a sequel. Even if it wasn't as decent of a movie as it is, the film cost 95 million to make and has made over 200 million, so we think it's a shoo-in for a sequel.
That said, we've had enough of the humans other than Robotnik, James Masden was good but its time to see the other CGI horrors of the Sonic universe. That's right we're talking about the other cast and crew of the Sonic games, comics, and shows that would be perfect additions to the sequel. Of course, not all of the Blue Blur's friends would transition so well, so we'll be balancing out our top picks with some that absolutely shouldn't cross over.
10 We'd Love To See: Knuckles The Echinda
So spoilers for the after-credits scene of the film, Tails shows up. And frankly, he looks really good! They did a fantastic job with his model and voice actor cast, so we're excited to see Miles Prower in the second film. The multi-tailed lad is the sidekick of Sonic and an absolute genius, but there's one more that typically joins in on the adventures as well.
That's right, Knuckles the Echidna! Knuckles isn't nearly as "fuzzy" as Tails and Sonic are, so we'd be interested to see how they'd make his model work. Plus, his design changes constantly, sometimes he has the same base body as Sonic, sometimes he's much bulkier. In either case, Knuckles is the perfect contrast to both Tails and Sonic and would really round things out.
9 We Don't Want To See: Amy Rose The Hedgehog
Before people get upset, we do actually like Amy. She's a neat character with a fun design who usually adds to any of the games she's in. But, depending on the writing, Amy can either be a cheeky yet intelligent girl crushing on sonic, or a love-struck obsessive with a one-track mind.
We know that a lot of the humor in the live-action film landed pretty well, but we don't have much faith that the same team would make Amy an interesting and complex character. We could easily see her having one joke about liking Sonic that she phrases in different ways throughout the entirety of the sequel, so she's low on our list of potential adds.
8 We'd Love To See: Metal Sonic
We're starting to realize that a lot of this list boils down to characters we'd like the see the movie studio's CGI team make models of. Metal Sonic would be both a fantastical add and a difficult one. Adding a fur texture onto a sonic model is one thing, making a Robot that constantly reflects the scene around him while still looking realistic is another entirely.
Metal Sonic would be fantastic if they managed to nail the design but would be horrifying if they didn't. We don't have much faith in their writing complexity, but after that 5 million dollar extension to fix Sonics' horrible original design, we have faith in their CGI team.
7 We Don't Want To See: Chaos, The Original Emerald Guardian
As far as villains in the Sonic universe go, Chaos is one of the worst. A lot of villains that are just primal or a part of nature end up pretty boring because we as humans can't relate to them or their goals easily. Robotnik may be evil, but at a base level, we understand his motivations and goals.
Chaos is just a mindless creature. It'd look cool on film since their made of a watery substance and their brain is visible at all times. But, as far as a "character" addition, there are much better choices.
6 We'd Love To See: Shadow The Hedgehog
Out of everyone on this list, this seems like the most obvious choice. Of course, if you have Sonic, you got to add Shadow. The contrast between the two is what keeps people as fans of the franchise.
The only question is, which Shadow should they use? Pre Sonic Adventure 2 Shadow where he's purely a villain? Post SA2 where he's the anti-hero? The version of him from the Gamecube Shadow the Hedgehog game where he murders constantly and uses guns? Who knows! But, whatever they decide, we want him in the sequel.
5 We Don't Want To See: Silver The Hedgehog
Oh and here's the other "villain" we couldn't care less about. Sonic 2006 is a monstrosity of a game. It's buggy, the story is a mess, the gameplay isn't even close to fun, and there's a weird human-hedgehog relationship. This is the game that Silver is from. Silver the Hedgehog is an odd-looking creature with telekinetic abilities, and that's about as much as we could tell you.
He has little to no personality, his design isn't nearly as striking as Shadow's, and his powers would be interesting but not anything special if used in the film. Silver just seems like a waster in our opinion, as most of the later villains do.
4 We'd Love To See: Big The Cat And Froggy
Alright, this one is our one gimme selection. Big the Cat is an awful character and we're probably the only ones who would want to see him in the film. The dude has no real personality, is obsessed with his pet frog, and is commonly associated with our memories of the worst part of the OG Sonic Adventure game.
This lumbering Cat fishes, and that's about it. But, just imagine if they nailed the transition from cartoon to CG with this guy? How insane would it be to see this doofus on the big screen? We know that doesn't justify it but we just love his design for some unknown reason.
3 We Don't Want To See: Princess Elise
Princess Elise is the other big new character from Sonic 2006. She's a human girl who originally was going to be used as a "sacrifice" and become a vessel for an ancient evil known as Iblis. Princess Elise is from Soleanna, the city most of Sonic 2006 takes place in, and she runs into Sonic quite early.
Throughout the game, Sonic protects her and the two grow closer, culminating is a "romantic" kiss as Sonic becomes Super Sonic. If he wasn't a literal sentient animal, this interaction could've been a tad sweet. But, because he is, it's just gross and one of the weirdest things to happen in the franchise.
2 We'd Love To See: Any Type Of Chao
The Sonic Adventure games on the Nintendo Gamecube were a real triumph of their time. Looking back on them now, it might not seem that way, since they seem so janky and awkward. But, for their time, they really were innovative. And, one aspect that fans still wish were in new Sonic games to this day is the Chao Garden.
This was an area accessible in-between levels in Sonic Adventure 2 where the player could raise these little creatures named Chao's in a variety of ways. They're so weird looking yet adorable! We'd love to see one done in the artstyle of the movie, and maybe one could go from Egg to fully grown throughout the course of the movie? Plus, using one would be a good excuse to bring in a certain Cream-colored rabbit as well.
1 We Don't Want To See: Infinite From Sonic Forces
And finally, we want to pretend that Sonic Forces doesn't exist. The game came out around the same time as Sonic Mania and was a great contrast to show just how good Mania was. Sonic Mania went back to the classic mechanics' fans loved from the originals and elevated them.
Sonic Forces stuck to the newer aspects most fans dislike and doubled down on them. And, one double-downing instance is the overly dramatic story. The villain of said Story is Infinite, a mask-wearing...hedgehog who has a real beef with Shadow. Their powers are cool, but outside of that the character Infinite is truly equally as infinitely boring. Use the classics, no need to bring in the newer characters.
