Few companies are as synonymous with video games as Nintendo. As one of the most iconic video game developers of all time, Nintendo's repertoire of games is one of the most notable in the industry, with franchises such as Mario and The Legend of Zelda as merely two of their many noteworthy creations.
However, for each series like Mario Kart that is destined for a new release whenever a new console is unveiled, there are numerous other series who do not receive nearly as much love. So today, we're going to delve into Nintendo's more neglected franchises and examine the ten franchises that are the most overdue for a new entry!
10 Super Mario Strikers
One of the most iconic Mario Sports titles, the first Super Mario Strikers was released in 2005 for the Nintendo Gamecube. Notable for it's fast arcade-style soccer gameplay, the game received a sequel in the form of Mario Strikers Charged for the Nintendo Wii in 2007.
Despite the success and popularity of these two games, the series hasn't received a new entry in thirteen years. As Nintendo has recently put out a new entry to the Mario Tennis series for the Switch, we wouldn't be surprised of an announcement of a new Mario Strikers.
9 Elite Beat Agents
A cult classic, Elite Beat Agents was released for the Nintendo DS in 2006. Elite Beat Agents is a rhythm game noted for it's tight gameplay, humor, and memorable directions and characters. Despite receiving numerous awards and garnering a loyal cult following, the game has not received any kind of sequel.
The Nintendo Switch is a console possessing a great deal of potential regarding interesting controls and mechanics, and has the capability to be the perfect home for a new Elite Beat Agents.
8 Golden Sun
When discussing cult classics released by Nintendo, few games come to mind as quickly as Golden Sun. An RPG with a dedicated following, the game has accrued three entries, with the first title being released for the Gameboy Advance in 2001, and the most recent entry being released for the Nintendo DS in 2010.
Despite the love the series has garnered by its fanbase, the series has never broken out into the mainstream like other notable Nintendo RPG's such as Fire Emblem.
7 Wario Land
While in recent years Mario's rival, Wario has been primarily religated to appearances in Mario Kart, Mario Party, and various Mario Sports games, Wario has also served as the protagonist of his own series of platformers. Beginning with Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 for the original game boy, the last entry in the Wario Land series was Wario Land: Shake It for the Nintendo Wii in 2008.
As it's been twelve years since we've seen a new installment, it's due time for Mario's rival to receive another adventure of his own.
6 Punch Out
The original Punch Out is perhaps one of the most iconic games released for the NES. While the punch out series hasn't received a huge amount of entries, each game continued to focus on and improve upon the game's simplistic yet stellar boxing gameplay. The most recent entry to the series was released for the Nintendo Wii and received almost universally positive reviews, with the game improving upon nearly every element of its established formula.
While the Switch is home to Nintendo's more recent boxing focused title, ARMS, the two series have numerous distinctions and differences that have left countless fans awaiting a new entry to the Punch Out series.
5 Advance Wars
Over the past decade, Fire Emblem has been the Nintendo franchise most synonymous with the genre of tactics games. However, this was not always the case.
Dating back to 1988 with the Japan only Famicom Wars, the Advance Wars series was released in the west before Fire Emblem, with Advance Wars release in 2001 for the Gameboy Advance. Unfortunately, the last we've seen of the series was the release of Advance Wars: Days of Ruin in 2008 for the Nintendo DS.
4 Custom Robo
Though only two of the five entries in the Custom Robo series were released outside of Japan, the game's unique flavor and gameplay has allowed it to garner numerous fans. A series of RPGs in which individuals can battle each other using miniature customizable robots, Custom Robo hasn't seen a new entry since all the way back in 2007 with the release of Custom Robo Arena in 2007.
As that entry had utilized online multiplayer, it would be interesting to see how an entry utilize the Switch's online capabilities.
3 Pokémon Snap
While Pokémon Snap was a one-off stand alone game released for the Nintendo 64 in 1999, the game has countless fans who've long supported the game receiving a sequel.
Rather than being a game that focuses on traditional Pokémon battles, Pokémon Snap is a first-person experience in which players can take photos of Pokémon in the wild. If there was a console fit for a Pokémon Snap sequel, it's the Switch. The game could utilize the console's gyroscope in order to create an incredibly immersive experience unlike any other.
2 F-Zero
While Nintendo develops one of the most popular and noteworthy racing franchises in the form of Mario Kart, their lesser known racing series F-Zero hasn't seen a new game since F-Zero Climax in 2004. While Mario Kart is known for item-based antics, F-Zero is characterized by it's high speed and futuristic setting. It's really saying something when the series poster boy, Captain Falcon, has appeared in more Super Smash Bros. games than entries of his own series.
We'd love to see an entry on the Switch that makes use of online multiplayer to pit sizable groups of up to thirty players against each other.
1 Mother
At this point, it's almost a meme for players to mention the prospects of a new game within the Mother series. While only one of the the series three games were initially released outside of Japan, the game has transcended cult status and has influenced countless popular games such as Undertale.
Notable for it's quirky humor and modern setting, countless players have been waiting for a new entry in the series ever since Mother 3 ended with a cliff hanger that has still yet to be resolved, nearly fifteen years after the game's release.
