Avatar Director James Cameron Praises Resident Evil Movies

Many have been working through a backlog of media since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, revisiting old favorites and discovering new gems. Academy Award-winning Director James Cameron is no different, and recently lavished praise on the film adaptation of Resident Evil.

"One of my guilty-pleasure films that I actually think is quite beautifully made is Resident Evil,” Cameron said in an interview with Empire. The film, released in 2002 and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, is loosely based on the Capcom Resident Evil franchise and has spawned five sequels.

Starring Milla Jovovich, the flick also features Avatar alumnus Michelle Rodriguez in one of her early roles. "Watching Michelle Rodriguez in that film, moving like this feral creature, is joyful,” Cameron added. Resident Evil grossed over $100 million at the worldwide box office, but critically it was a disappointment. The aggregate score on Rotten Tomatoes sits at a lowly 36% and even made the late Roger Ebert’s most hated films list in 2005.

Cameron had been busy working on the sequels to Avatar in New Zealand before the coronavirus stopped production. The former top-grossing film of all-time has four sequels planned for release between 2021 and 2027. Principal photography for the second and third Avatar films has already been completed with post-production beginning in April 2019.

While the Resident Evil films have not won many awards, the franchise has garnered something of a cult following for its over-the-top violence and gore. Sporting modest budgets, the films have been able to turn a healthy profit, with the most recent bringing in over $300 million worldwide at a cost of only $40 million. Appearances from video game stalwarts Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine, and Albert Wesker have helped tie the two mediums together while creating an entirely new universe for the filmmakers to work in.

In April 2019, Screen Rant broke the news that a Resident Evil reboot was in the works from 47 Meters Down director Johannes Roberts. The project is intended to be more faithful to the video games and will amp up the scares. Casting is already underway with the roles of Chris and Claire Redfield, Leon S. Kennedy, and Jill Valentine all confirmed. Shooting was intended to begin this June, but due to the worldwide health crisis, it is unknown when production will begin.

James Cameron’s interview with Empire about his love of Resident Evil is available in its Celebration of Cinema issue, which is available now.
