Anytime that Destiny releases a teaser for new content, the fan base pores over it hoping to pick up any clues. To Bungie’s credit, the developer has keyed into this quality in its players and tries to reward them for repeat viewings of new Destiny trailers.
As expected, the Destiny 2 community is scrutinizing every detail from the latest trailers meant to tease the upcoming fall expansion. And while some of the more obvious information – like the fact that Saturn’s moon Europa features in both - has already been shared, there are some additional details that could be interesting to fans.
The latest discovery comes from Tman7003 on Reddit, who found similarities between Eris Morn’s “magic” in the Destiny 2 expansion trailer and an existing weapon in Destiny lore. If true, this connection could confirm a new leak about the Destiny 2 expansion that reveals details about its story, gameplay content, and even new destinations.
Tman7003 noticed that the energy Eris wields in her hand looks very similar to the idle animation of the Stranger’s Rifle from Destiny 1. Prior theories suggested that the Eris light is a hint towards new subclass abilities for the upcoming fall expansion, but that might not be the case. Early on, fans even thought that the scene features Eris wielding the darkness, which would support longstanding speculation that the Guardians would gain new “dark” subclasses in future Destiny 2 content.
The similarities between the animation in Eris’ hand and the Stranger’s Rifle are potentially significant because a recent rumor claimed that the Stranger will play a role in the upcoming expansion. In fact, fans shouldn’t have to wait too long to find out if it’s true, as the rumor claims that Eris Morn and The Drifter – who is also heading to Europa in a different teaser – eventually meet up with The Stranger on the moon.
Out of all the storylines in Destiny that players feel were left unresolved, The Stranger narrative typically comes up a lot more than most. Players want to see what The Stranger’s role in the grander Destiny universe is, beyond giving Guardians her pulse rifle and disappearing. There have been hints of The Stranger’s return in Destiny 2 lore but nothing substantial has materialized. One popular theory is that The Stranger might be Ana Bray’s adopted sister, Elsie.
But while an involved theory like this carries weight on closer inspection, there are numerous explanations as to what Eris is “holding” in her hand. Not to mention, it’s also possible that Bungie simply reused an animation for the teaser. Assuming the studio is doing a lot of this teaser work in-house, it might have been quicker to find an existing animation rather than design a new one.
Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
