There are many types of video games that are able to resonate with audiences, but it’s often the longer narratives and game lengths of RPG titles that lead to the most satisfying experiences. There are plenty of RPGs that cater to the eclectic sensibilities of the genre, but it’s the Final Fantasy series that’s become one of the most successful video game franchises of all time.
Square’s library of RPGs is diverse, but Final Fantasy’s popularity has only increased and there are no signs of it dying down. The Final Fantasy games are full of impressive enemies, but the Diamond Weapon that has appeared in a few select titles is especially fascinating.
10 It’s Designed To Protect The Planet
The Final Fantasy series features plenty of evil individuals, but Sephiroth is one of the most memorable and it's because of his destructive actions that the Diamond Weapon activates in Final Fantasy VII. Sephiroth summons Meteor, which puts the world at risk, which in turn triggers the Diamond Weapon as a measure to stop Sephiroth.
It sets into motion a thrilling battle where so much is on the line. Ironically, Verstael Besithia’s use of the Diamond Weapon in Final Fantasy XV is the complete opposite and he turns them into tools to ruin the planet.
9 It Was Supposed To Be The Final Boss For Final Fantasy XV's Episode Aranea
Final Fantasy XV is an incredibly ambitious entry in the series and its decision to slowly release new content via seasons and episodes was a unique approach even if it wasn't a complete success. Final Fantasy XV didn't get to finish its vision and only Episode Ardyn was released.
However, Final Fantasy XV -The Dawn of the Future- novelization fills in the details of what was to happen and Aranea's final challenge was going to revolve around taking out the Diamond Weapon's magitek cores. It looks like future installments would have also featured a Sapphire Weapon as a major boss.
8 Cloud & His Party Technically Don't Defeat It
Final Fantasy VII introduces five powerful Weapons that are all optional battles, with the exception of the Diamond Weapon. It's presented as one of the more difficult bosses in the game, but it's important to realize that Cloud and company still don't destroy the Diamond Weapon even after they reach their victory.
The defeat segues right into the evil Shinra Electric Power Company's use of the Sister Ray, a gigantic Mako Cannon, which is actually what eliminates the Diamond Weapon and allows the party to progress.
7 It's The Only Way To Get The Rising Sun
There are many mechanics to manage in Final Fantasy battles and everyone has their own strategy. An easy thing to neglect is that the player can steal from enemies, which is sometimes the only way to obtain an item.
This is the case with the Diamond Weapon in Final Fantasy VII. The player can steal the Rising Sun from the enemy, which is a powerful long-range weapon for Yuffie that cannot be found anywhere else in the game. It's easy to get caught up in the action of the fight, but the Rising Sun should not be overlooked.
6 They Might Only Be Effective At Night
Final Fantasy XV's interpretation of the Diamond Weapon features the tool as a mass-produced nuisance that’s used to take down Lucian forces and further Niflheim's stranglehold on the world. One of Niflheim's first targets is Insomnia and an attack is launched with the Diamond Weapons.
However, when the sun later rises all of the Diamond Weapons are gone. Even though their magitek armor is supposed to be lightproof, this implies otherwise. The Diamond Weapons are only shown to fight in darkness, which could lead to an interesting strategy against them.
5 A Piece Of Treasure Is Modeled After It
The Diamond Weapon has a very distinct look when it comes to enemy designs in the Final Fantasy franchise. It's a creature that comes across as both man-made but also alien. Final Fantasy VII Remake includes a new side-quest called "Corneo's Secret Stash" that tasks Cloud and company with recovering a number of Don Corneo's treasures.
One of these items, the Diamond Tiara, is shaped in the same style as the Diamond Weapon. It’s a nice nod to the future obstacle, but its inspiration also makes it a particularly unusual fashion accessory.
4 They Run On Miasma
Final Fantasy XV features a version of the Diamond Weapon that villainous Verstael Besithia orders as the ultimate tool to enslave those that oppose him. The Diamond Weapons are gigantic creatures that feel like monsters and machines.
These beasts may appear to be invincible from an outside glance, but they contain several glowing red spheres that are the key to their power. These are the magitek cores that power the Diamond Weapon and they are filled with the black mist, miasma, as its fuel. The only way to end a Diamond Weapon is to rid it of its source of miasma.
3 It's One Of Seven Failsafe Weapons
The purpose that the Diamond Weapon serves in Final Fantasy VII is that it is supposed to kick into action if the planet's safety is ever threatened. The Diamond Weapon is incredibly powerful as a result, but there are actually four other weapons that work in tandem with it, all with the same purpose.
The Diamond Weapon is accompanied by Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire, Jade, Omega, and Ultimate Weapons. All of these powerful security measures pose difficult challenges to Cloud and his party, but Diamond Weapon is the pinnacle of that frustration.
2 They Might Be Transformed Researchers
Final Fantasy XV is structured around a giant war and Verstael Besithia is a tyrant who commissions the Diamond Weapon to be built at the First Magitek Production Facility. It's known that the Diamond Weapon functions through the use of magitek cores and miasma, but their origin may also have an extra morbid ingredient.
The final message left by the Magitek Production Facility's research team seems to imply that they've been turned into the Diamond Weapon to serve the greater good and that Verstael may have even intentionally daemonified them.
1 It's A Surprise Boss In Final Fantasy Airborne Brigade
Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy XV are the two titles in the franchise that do the most with Diamond Weapon, but it's still an entity that's referenced in a limited capacity in other Final Fantasy spin-off titles.
One of the more substantial instances of this is that Diamond Weapon shows up as an EX Boss in the free to play mobile title, Final Fantasy Airborne Brigade. Diamond Weapon appears in the "Shattered World" event and it's a fun take on the powerful enemy that fits in surprisingly well in the spin-off.
