PS5 Game Sharing Details Revealed | Game Rant

The PlayStation 4's game sharing feature, "Primary PS4," was something that a lot of PlayStation users found themselves using so a household of gamers could play one title without having to buy multiple copies. Sony has revealed that the PlayStation 5 will keep this feature as players transition over to it, just with a different name. Not only that, but the feature has received an update that makes it even easier to use on PS5.

Primary Ps4, as the name suggests, allows owners to set up one PS4 as their primary home console. Doing this allows anyone that uses the Primary PS4 to access its entire library of media and video games, even if they log into it using a different account. On the PlayStation 5, this system will be called "Console Sharing and Offline Play." It will basically offer the same service as Primary PS4, allowing multiple users to access one account's digital content, even if the console isn't connected to the internet.

According to gaming news outlet Stevivor, only one PS5 can have Console Sharing enabled at any one time, but the feature can be toggled on or off at the whim of the owner. So, if owners want to change their primary PS5 console, they can. Accessing the feature is fairly simple, too, with the PlayStation 5's brand new UI. To get to it, all players need to do is the following:

  • Go to Settings
  • Users and Accounts > Other
  • Select Console Sharing and Offline Play
  • Choose Disable or Don't Disable.

Brand new PlayStation 5's will automatically have Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled, but owners can choose to toggle that on and off. Sony has also made it so that Console Sharing won't interfere with the Primary PlayStation 4, so anyone planning to play with both consoles using the same account can do so without the worry of having to always toggle the feature.

Xbox Series X users won't have this luxury. Two Xbox One consoles can both access an Xbox Live account simultaneously, but attempting to log in with a Series X will kick the other consoles out.

Overall, Console Sharing is good news for fans of the Primary PS4 feature. It's always possible for a gaming system or any form of technology to lose a popular feature when it transitions from one iteration to the next, so it's nice to know that Primary PS4 managed to avoid this.

PS5 releases on November 12, 2020.
