Pokemon GO: Best Ho-Oh Counters (January 2021) | Game Rant

The new year has begun with Pokemon GO bringing Ho-Oh as the first raid boss of 2021. This legendary Pokemon is available from January 1st, 2021 to January 5th, 2021 for players to fight and attempt to capture.

Something special about this Ho-Oh encounter in Pokemon GO is that Ho-Oh during these raids has the chance to be shiny. Those who want this unique form of Ho-Oh will need to challenge raids multiple times in order to increase the odds of encountering it.

With Ho-Oh being a legendary Pokemon, it won't be a cakewalk in battle to defeat. Most players will need the extra support from multiple trainers in order to beat the raid, but having counters to this Pokemon will help the raid go just a little smoother.

Ho-Oh is a dual fire and flying-type Pokemon. This means that it is weak to rock, water, and electric type moves. It however is also resistant to fighting, bug, steel, fire, grass, and fairy-type moves.

There are plenty of powerful rock, water, and electric-type Pokemon currently available in Pokemon GO. However, some of course are far better than others.

Some of the best rock-type Pokemon to bring against Ho-Oh as well as their most powerful movesets against Ho-Oh are:

  • Tyranitar - Smack Down and Stone Edge
  • Rhyperior - Smack Down and Rock Wrecker
  • Rampardos - Smack Down and Rock Slide
  • Terrakion - Smack Down and Rock Slide
  • Aerodactyl - Rock Throw and Rock Slide
  • Omastar - Rock Throw and Rock Slide

With water-types, there is a lot more variety in Pokemon due to how common the type is. However, the best ones to bring up against Ho-Oh during raids include:

  • Mega Blastoise - Water Gun and Hydro Cannon
  • Swampert - Water Gun and Hydro Cannon
  • Kyogre - Waterfall and Surf
  • Gyarados - Waterfall and Hydro Pump
  • Kingler - Bubble and Crab Hammer
  • Feraligatr - Water Gun and Hydro Cannon

Finally, there are plenty of electric-type Pokemon that will be helpful against Ho-Oh. Many of these Pokemon include legendary Pokemon that could have been caught during previous raids, but there are more ordinary non-raid Pokemon as well. These electric-type Pokemon are:

  • Raikou - Thunder Shock and Wild Charge
  • Electivire - Thunder Shock and Wild Charge
  • Zapdos - Thunder Shock and Thunderbolt
  • Zekrom - Charge Beam and Wild Charge
  • Magnezone - Spark and Wild Charge

After taking down Ho-Oh, players are recommended to use Golden Razz Berries or whatever they can use in order to increase the odds of this legendary Pokemon staying in their Pokeball. There is nothing more disappointing than taking down a difficult raid only for the Pokemon to flee at the end.
